Together, we aim to reduce residual waste per person per year from the current 205 kg to 120 kg.

What is Zero Waste?

Frankfurt wants to become a Zero Waste City as one of the first cities in Germany. What exactly does that mean? Really no more waste at all?

Zero Waste means “no waste”. And therefore less waste. This is exactly the goal of our large-scale campaign: Together with all people in Frankfurt, we want to reduce the residual waste per capita and year from currently 205 kg to 120 kg.

There are many interesting and motivating activities and offers. We would like to encourage you to participate.
After all, working together to combat waste and conserve raw materials is fun and easy to do in everyday life, both at home and at work.

Protect the Environment – Promote Health – Reduce Costs

That’s why Zero Waste Makes Sense.

The zero waste idea enables us all to avoid waste from the outset and use resources more efficiently. And that significantly reduces the environmental impact. This lifestyle promotes awareness of our consumption and encourages us to make more sustainable decisions that benefit both nature and our health. In addition, Zero Waste strengthens the community by supporting local businesses and working together towards a cleaner, more livable future.

  • Protect the environment:
We consume too many raw materials and our planet suffers from the enormous amount of waste we produce. If we reduce waste together, we can reduce the environmental impact, conserve natural resources and improve our quality of life.
  • Promote health:
Less waste means a cleaner environment. This not only contributes to a more pleasant cityscape, but also to a healthier lifestyle for all of us.
  • Cost savings:
A zero-waste lifestyle can help you save money. If you avoid disposable products and invest in durable alternatives, you will reduce your expenses for unnecessary purchases. In addition, Zero Waste can help to reduce or not increase disposal costs. And this affects us all directly, because we pay these as part of the additional housing costs.

Separate – Avoid – Reuse:

That’s why Frankfurt Wants to
Become a Zero Waste City

Being a Zero Waste City doesn’t mean no waste at all—
That would be unrealistic. There will always be some waste that can’t be recycled. But we can significantly increase the share that is recycled. And we can keep working to reduce the total amount of waste even further.

How does that work? … For example, through better waste separation, promoting reuse, and reducing residual waste. The city of Frankfurt am Main is responsible for networking all existing initiatives in the area of waste prevention and will support them through joint public relations work and coordinated campaigns.
